Научная и научно-учебная деятельность кафедры находится на стыке трёх направлений: физики, информационных технологий, химии (экологии).

В связи с увеличением производства и потребления продукции топливно-энергетического комплекса, развитием нефте- и газотранспортных систем, а также переходом отечественных предприятий на выпуск продукции по международным стандартам, ужесточением требований к охране окружающей среды и широким внедрением сложных аналитических автоматизированных систем контроля качества и мониторинга в рамках направления«Техническая физика» кафедра ИТТЭК осуществляет подготовку бакалавров по профилю «Нефтехимия и аналитическое приборостроение»
