Now it’s time for one final attack.

Now it’s time for one final attack.

It probably isn’t but I’m to hyper to care so I’ll just say that this always looked like a Jesus shot to me.

Okay, it flys down in such a way that means that the sun is right behind it, that just nicely shows off the glowing wings.

Closing in not just to show extra panic but the speed of the attack and…

It’s over now.

So how did it fall forward, or did it roll in a really weird way. I’m sure I’d have remembered a roll if it had happen?

Once that part of the battle is over, Shinji withdraws his pokemon. He surrenders the battle.

And because Shinji isn’t completely nuts in this battle (unlike another certain battle he was in where he failed to take down any pokemon), he lets it go and finishes up here. This despite the fact that he actually has another powerhouse on him. There’s just no point in getting his pokemon any more hurt and he’s learned how different they are.

So that was the battle. Lets look at the techniques that each of them use:

Shirona: wrapping fire around Gabarisu and attacking a dig whilst it’s still in the ground. Defending with wings. Not attacking until the opponent’s technique is revealed. Timing. Hiding her own reactions until the right time in the battle or acting.

Shinji: wrapping fire around a pokemon and then using dig on it (failed), timing (failed once then succeeded later on), getting the other pokemon in the air using haze, getting the other pokemon to use hyperbeam to ground itself. Using weaker pokemon to better understand his opponent. Hiding his own reactions until the right time in the battle or acting.

The skill level here isn’t that far apart. There are times where I can say that the only difference is that Shirona is slightly tighter in her timing and acting. In fact, Shinji’s techniques are overall more impressive even though he fails. Quite simply Shirona’s pokemon are of so much more of a high level so that is why Shinji loses. However, it’s Shinji’s and Shirona’s personality I want to discuss here. During the battle it becomes clear that they have very similar thought and battle patterns. We also get to see quite a bit of respect for each other. Shinji wants a battle and therefore Shirona gives him one and doesn’t assume that he’s a weakling or needs to be taken down a peg. In fact, it’s Satoshi’s defending of Shinji that makes her so very interested in Satoshi. She doesn’t go easy on Shinji but uses her best timing, acting and one of her powerhouses. It is believable when she says she can see them becoming champions. It’s also notable how calm they are. Like I said, during the sand sequence, Shirona and Shinji are both really calm when everyone else wouldn’t be.

Continuing the episode

Whilst, Shirona has no reaction to this, the crowd do and give us the reaction that a Silver expy would get from his Wataru expy… or rather not. They just call him stupid. This effects Satoshi.

It’s pretty neat seeing Satoshi defend Shinji though at this stage it isn’t known how much of a jerk Shinji could be. He doesn’t particularly like Shinji but he’s willing to see that Shinji did nothing wrong in challenging Shirona, even if Shinji doesn’t really appreciate Satoshi’s actions.

Anyway this makes Satoshi’s presence known to Shirona and she becomes more interested in both of them.

Satoshi calls Shinji out for not going to the Pokemon Centre but

When Shirona joins in, he actually goes there. Shinji having more respect for Shirona than Satoshi isn’t that surprising thanks to the fact that we’re already aware of how much Shinji dislikes Satoshi. However, at this point the viewer is not really aware of how much respect Shinji can have either. We’ve been shown his politeness before but that can be a very different trait.

There is though another question raised by this and unfortunately we don’t really get an answer: how long would it have been before Shinji went to the Pokemon Centre and where was he planning on going? We know that he uses Pokemon Centres from previous and later episodes and that’s about all the evidence that is ever given in any direction on the matter.

Sorry. My sense of humour can be a little immature.

Anyway, at the pokemon centre, Shirona takes care of Shinji’s pokemon and Shinji reveals a bit more about himself as a trainer and more about his pokemon. This is pure fan service: knowing that Shinji begun with a Dodaitose does not add to the Shinji Satoshi rivalry. It’s nice to know that Shinji is as accomplished as Satoshi but we could guess that anyway.

I really like how Shirona and Dodaitose frame Shinji here.

The camera moves quite a bit during this sequence highlighting how little interest Shinji is taking in comparision to Satoshi and friends. This can be read in two ways: Shinji doesn’t care for his pokemon and how they’re treated or Shinji trusts Shirona to do a good job. The presentation lets you think both which gives it great rewatch value since the first time the viewer sees this they’re more likely to assume a lack of care. Anyway, Satoshi gets into another argument with Shinji and Shirona takes notice.

I like the amount of surprise they have at Shirona’s interest in them. It’s not just that she’s interested in them but that she isn’t judging them. Now by this point, I think it’s safe to say that Shirona’s idea of Shinji should be as good as the viewers (assuming the viewer has been watching since the beginning of DP).

She takes them back to the ruins and gives them her great piece of advise: 'Friend, when one life meets another something is born.' The cool part though is that she gives it to both of them. They both have something to learn of each other. Why does she give both of them advice? Because she ships them. Because she sees potential in both of them.

Zooming on to the ending (since I’m focusing on what happens in between elsewhere) , the last thing we see Shinji do is stalk watch Satoshi, with his pokemon watching too. I just noticed that Shinji and all his pokemon but Hikozaru have pretty much the same expression. Just a little more evidence that Hikozaru does not fit in.

To deconstruct, by my understanding is to take an idea and expand upon it in such a way that challenges exactly what the idea was in the first place. A deconstruction has the advantage of making something more interesting but the disadvantage of removing the original appeal. The question on if deconstructing is worth doing is how much creativity and effort available to be put in to make it work. I’d say that in Shinji’s case it’s super effective.

By having the battle with the champion not only leave no impact on the character, but show how similar they are is pretty subversive in itself. However, to have the rest of the episode show how intelligent this character is makes it deconstructive. Shinji does have his immature side but it’s not really on show here. This also allows the champion to become that bit more interesting. Not being judgmental is an odd trait to give a character and especially one that’s not only a powerful one but is placed next to a very controversial character.

It’s worthwhile asking why deconstruct Silver though? I mean is Silver a bad character? Not really. In fact he works pretty well and is one of the better examples of his type being played straight. Could Silver have been a bad character? Easily. The basic appeal being based on simplifying morality is kind of… icky. Bad people can be great debaters. Whist an argument can be stupid, it can have great arguments attached to it. Relying on bad people being idiots is not a great way to deal with bad people. I’m not saying that you can’t have a dumb bad person but the narrative should address the idea that the characters dumb. If you don’t than you’re also encouraging your audience not to think: a great move marketing wise since people are more likely to listen to adverts then but otherwise terrible making people not see your hard work and from a moral stand point plain icky. Here, they even end up asking 'is Shinji a bad person?’ and that’s challenging the viewers to think and that’s why I started to love Shinji.
