Национальные экономические системы большинства развитых стран к началу XXI века трансформировались в так называемые сервисные экономики. Услуговый сектор составляет в настоящее время около 70-80% ВВП в развитых странах и 40-50% ВВП – в развивающихся странах. С точки зрения занятости, только сфера услуг демонстрирует устойчивый рост с 1999 года, достигнув 70% от общей занятости в ЕС в 2009 году.
