Александр Флеминг родился в 1881 году в семье шотландского фермера. Он был младшим из восьми детей в семье. Медицинское образование Флеминг получил в Лондоне. Там он и начал заниматься медицинскими исследованиями в больнице Святой Марии. Он заинтересовался антибактериальными средствами. Во время военной службы Флеминг исследовал проблемы инфицирования ран и использования антисептиков. Он пытался найти антибактериальное средство, которое было бы безвредно для живых тканей.
