It has been over two years since we last spoke with Gold Coast’s Cody Simpson, who, at that time, was an opening act for Big Time Rush, and gearing up for the release of his debut album, Paradise. A couple years later he has one more album under his growing repertoire, Surfers Paradise (you may have heard his catchy acoustic pop track “La Da Dee” during the end credits of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2), put his dancing skills to the test as a competitor on Dancing with the Stars, and headlined his own 40+ date North American tour.

We had the opportunity to chat with the ever-busy young artist, who recently returned to Los Angeles for more (you guessed it) studio time, after a quick trip to Vancouver for work on the upcoming Nickelodeon film Tripwrecked.
ON “HOME TO MAMA”:

This past summer sparked a long teased collaboration between Simpson, and fellow musician Justin Bieber, who were photographed in the recording studio together this past July. The first look at the project, “Home To Mama,” was released earlier this month, with fans and people in the industry calling it a “John Mayer-esque ballad.” “I’m really stoked that it was received so well,” Simpson says of the positive response. “We just wanted to put a little acoustic romance into our fans’ lives,” describing the tune as one the pair wrote together quite quickly. “It was a nice collaboration [in which] I was able to contribute my vibe with the guitar, and [Justin] had some lovely vocal runs in there that you could hear us going back and forth with in the outro. It was a really cool tune.”

ON THE WRITING RELATIONSHIP:

Simpson previously described both being able to relate when it came to “love and women.” Elaborating on the statement, he and Justin wrote a lot of music about experiences they had about relationships, life, love, and the concepts around those. “It was easy to relate, because we had both gotten out of serious relationships, and ended up pouring out song after song,” he says, noting that they ended up with a number close to sixteen.

ON DANCING WITH THE STARS:

After appearing on the eighteenth season of Dancing with the Stars and putting in strong performances through five weeks of competition, Simpson and his partner Witney Carson finished in ninth place. He sums up the experience, describing his time on the show as “cool, something new and interesting.” While he had a good time competing, he was unable to choose a favourite dance, noting that “every week was something different,” although each allowed him to broaden his movements.

ON TOURING:

No stranger to touring, at an age as young as 15, Simpson was opening for acts such as Big Time Rush and Justin Bieber, more recently having the opportunity to headline his own tours across the continent. Just this past summer, he was on the road in Europe, performing in Germany, Portugal, and Spain. Next up, a tour of his home country? “I would love to tour Australia [and] do my own tour over there. I’m working on new music there, and working on getting that out, establishing my new sound,” he says, adding that he’ll be performing and touring a lot once his new music is released. “I’d love to go up and do Canada again, and I’ve never performed in Italy. You don’t hear of shows there very much, but once you reach a certain level of success, I think you [may] be able to go over there and do something.”

ON HIS SIBLINGS:

Simpson and his family, including his parents and younger siblings Alli and Tom, relocated to Los Angeles in 2010. He credits the move with being able to bring the trio closer together, as they can relate with one another in having childhood friends and family members across the world. His sister Alli is a budding musician and model, who has released a few singles of her own, and brother Tom is a talented videographer at age ten. “My sister’s doing an incredible job for her age, and my brother, I’m sure, has a long and prosperous future ahead of him as well,” he shares, “My parents have been able to open doors for myself – moving us over to L.A. to pursue [my music] – and then me having taken it from there, and now being able to open doors for not only my sister, but my little brother too, so it’s really nice.”

ON TRIPWRECKED AND ACTING:

Vancouver fans were in a frenzy when Simpson had tweeted he was heading towards the city on November 10th, with many figuring out he would be working on the upcoming Nickelodeon film, Tripwrecked: a family vacation that turns into an epic disaster involving a cruise ship, a stolen sea lion, and a tub full of fro-yo. “I’m playing myself in the film [and] I had the chance to perform in the film, and do a little bit of acting,” he reveals. “It was quite cool. I enjoyed dabbling into a new area of entertainment and a new area of expertise, and would like to do a little more of it in the future. Obviously music is always going to be my number one passion, but it’s always nice to try new things. I love art and entertainment in general, and any outlet that I can express that is always fun.”

ON VANCOUVER AND THE CITY’S FANS:

Simpson’s first visit to Vancouver was in September 2012. Since then, he’s made a couple of stops to the Canadian city, including an appearance the following month at We Day Vancouver, and a concert on his 2013 Paradise Tour. “It was nice. I love coming to Vancouver and I always have a great time up there. I’ve been up there a few times now, it’s always a good time being able to come up and I got to meet a couple of fans,” he says. His three day stint had encounters with fans waiting at the airport, to outside his hotel in the evening – in quite chilly weather, I might add. “It’s nice to show some love for the Canadians, they’re very dedicated.”

ON HIS NEW MUSIC AND PLANS FOR THE YEAR’S REMAINDER:

Busy in the studio as of late, Simpson describes the motivation for putting out his new material: “I’ve certainly gone through a musical transition at the moment, just working on the new project and establishing that. I’m really looking forward to people hearing where my head’s at now, and hearing the new [material]. It’s very exciting.” While the remainder of the year will see Simpson busy in the studio, he does have some projects in the works for his fans. “I’m working on getting more content up online, some cool videos and tunes for [outlets] like SoundCloud. I’m hoping to get some original music under my belt, which I’m working on right now. I’m looking forward to the new year and 2015.”
