Термин «социальное представление» придуман Миллсом. Миллс предлагает постоянно в научных исследованиях использовать этот термин .
По его мнению Социологическое воображение — это не только понимание и изменение общества, но и способность связать малые и повседневное представлять в его тесной связи с большим, общезначимым. Человек сможет оценить результаты, перспективы собственной жизни и найти пути изменения ее в лучшую сторону, только тогда когда поместит себя в рамки своего времени и своего общества.
Поэтому необходимо иметь и развивать социологическое воображение.
