Ежегодно в феврале-марте в столице Гоа, Панаджи, проходит трехдневный карнавал. Традицию эту, как и многое другое, гоанцы переняли у португальцев. В эти дни улицы Панаджи оглашаются музыкой и криками, движутся процессии танцоров и музыкантов, едут огромные цветные восхитительно уродливые карнавальные повозки. Похожие парады проходят в Маргао, Васко де Гама и прочих городках этого небольшого штата.

Пусть гоанский карнавал не сравнится с бразильскими, но он имеет свой неповторимый колорит, сложившийся в этом краю Индии при смешении разных культур. Сейчас этот праздник уже не так связан с католической религией, дающей людям шанс «оторваться» перед 40-дневным постом, и отмечается не только местными жителями.

В пляжной деревне Арамболь празднуется свой однодневный маленький карнавал, организованный группой творческих иностранцев. Этот мини-карнавал называют еще «парадом фриков»: среди его участников – самые колоритные персонажи Гоа, не жалеющие свои тела для пирсинга и татуировок, а в этот день еще и облачающиеся в странные, но веселые костюмы на заданную тему. Процессия стартует с арамбольского пляжа и в сопровождении музыкантов с барабанами продвигается в сторону Мандрема, периодически останавливаясь, чтобы собрать новых участников и от души потанцевать. Все это продолжается до вечера, а на закате на песке зажигаются костры. В буквальном смысле огня этому шоу добавляют "фаерщики" (жонглирующие булавами и прочими пылающими предметами), а любой, у кого если хоть какой-нибудь музыкальный инструмент, может присоединиться к «оркестру».

Точную дату арамбольского мини-карнавала предсказать невозможно. Она формируется ближе к февралю и может поменяться в последний момент из-за того, что местным властям это действо не очень-то нравится. А вот официальный карнавал в Панаджи в 2012 году стартует 18-го февраля.
