Результаты многих фонетических исследований имеют приклад­ное значение и используются в различных областях. Самое древнее и, возможно, самое важное из них — это создание письменности для бесписьменных народов и ее совершенствование. Обучение пись­му всегда идет с опорой на фонетику. Очевидной сферой приложе­ния фонетики является обучение произношению на иностранном языке. Интересно высказывание выдающегося русского ученого-лингвиста Л.В.Щербы о значении правильного произношения: «В прежнее время к ошибкам выговора относились снисходитель­но, ошибки же грамматические считались очень грубыми. В настоящее время ведутся разработки синтезатора, способного озвучить любой мате­риал, который вводится в компьютер в виде письменного текста. Ожидается, что программы по автоматическому распознаванию речи найдут в скором времени применение во всевозможных сфе­рах деятельности человека, например при организации информа­ционно-справочной системы, способной получать и выдавать раз­личную информацию по голосовому запросу. Это окажется полез­ным при заказе билетов, в медицине, банковской службе. Воз­можно применение таких программ при обеспечении речевого управления техническими устройствами в условиях, опасных для человека; при создании «автоматической машинистки»; при осу­ществлении автоматического перевода и т.д.
