Изначально в 2000 и 2001 годах проводился как одно событие, но затем разделился на два варианта: Sensation White и Sensation Black.

В России фестиваль проводится в северной столице – Санкт-Петербурге. Кстати, есть некий дресс-код. Так, все участники должны быть одеты исключительно в белое, и это придают мероприятию особую изюминку. Но каждый год организаторы вносят что-то новое. К примеру, в 2009 году организовали постановку «Древо любви», на которую ушло порядка 10 миллионов евро. А в 2010 году прямо во время фестиваля работали 28 фонтанов, струи которых били вверх. В 2011 году всем участникам раздали оранжевые, зелёные и жёлтые перчатки, светившиеся в неоновых лучах.
