В целях демилитаризации полигона Министерство обороны США выделило Казахстану средства на ликвидацию этой инфраструктуры. В сентябре 1996 года в Курчатове вступило в строй совместное казахстанско-американское предприятие по производству печатных плат для электронной промышленности. Здесь же создан Международный радиоэкологический центр. Научно-технический потенциал бывшего ядерного полигона должен работать на мир.
