Предки славян – праславяне - принадлежали к индоевропейской семье народов, населявших обширные территории Европейского материка, протянувшиеся от Европы до Индии, в IV-III тысячелетиях до нашей эры.
Во второй половине I тысячелетия до нашей эры древние славяне заселили земли от Эльбы и Одера на Западе до Верхнего Приднепровья и Среднего Поднепровья на Востоке. В период совместного проживания славянские племена говорили на одном праславянском языке. Однако по мере расселения они стали всё больше отдаляться друг от друга, что особенно проявлялось в языке и культуре.
Несколько позже славянская семья разделилась на три ветви, послужившие основой для трёх современных наций – западных славян (поляки, чехи, словаки), южных славян (болгары, хорваты, сербы, словенцы, македонцы, боснийцы, черногорцы), восточных славян (русские, белорусы, украинцы).
