Пустыня начинается резким переходом от бора, лиственничника или торфяного болота к песку. Никакой промежуточной зоны, никакой “ничейной земли” — природа не признает здесь нейтралитета. Можно одной ногой стоять в пустыне, а другой в тайге. В межбарханных понижениях имеются залесенные участки — лиственничники, ерники, даже влаголюбивый кедровый стланик. Можно увидеть такой сюрреалистический пейзаж, как лед на песке (не обязательно зимой, но и летом).

По краям пустыни из под песков во многих местах вытекают ручьи. Вода чистейшая.
