It happened near Michigan. There was an accidental explosion and a 19-year old boy Alexis Martin fell to the floor with a terrible hole in his stomach. When Dr. Beaumont came to the place, he found the youth in a hopeless condition. A part of the lung and a part of the stomach were ex- truding from the wound and the stomach itself was lacerated.
No one in those days could cure such injuries. He cleaned the wound and applied a superficial dressing. When twenty minutes passed and the youth didn't die the doctor redressed the wound and took out pieces of broken bones. Time went on and Martin continued to live.

But one day when they were near Martin's native town, Martin ran away. He returned to Canada, married and had children. But he was very poor and finally had to return to Dr. Beaumont again to become an "experimental animal". Thanks to this hole Dr. Beaumont solved many questions of digestive system. Martin and his master became famous all over the USA.
When Dr. Beaumont died, Martin continued the "business" alone, but when he died his family refused to take a very large sum of money which was offered to them if they gave the famous stomach to the museum. They buried him in secret.
