Младший брат Чарли узнаёт, что все деньги отца по завещанию принадлежат его старшему брату Реймонду, о котором он даже не знал. Он едет к Реймонду с корыстными намерениями, но узнаёт, что тот страдает аутизмом, тогда он решает забрать его из больницы, чтобы заполучить несчастные деньги. Совершенно неожиданно для Чарли в нём просыпаются братские чувства, хотя ему сложного общаться с замкнутым и немногословным братом в силу своего эгоизма…

Этот фильм разрушает стереотипы о том, что люди, больные аутизмом, не могут любить, привязываться и заботиться, просто они закрыты для обычных людей. Реймонд становится спасением для одинокой души Чарли, он — его Rainman (человек дождя). Не сразу, но всё-таки Чарли понимает, как ему дорог и близок брат, который спасает его от «эмоциональной комы».

Точно могу сказать, что Оскар хоть и не самая объективная награда, но в данном случае попала в точку. «Человек дождя» открывает нам другого Тома Круза, не похожего на того, что снимался в «Миссия невыполнима», и подтверждает уже неоспоримый талант Дастина Хоффмана.
