На подготовительном этапе производится сбор и анализ всей имеющейся априорной информации по изучаемому водоему, включая гидрохимические, геологические, метеорологические и другие данные. Исходя из собранной априорной информации, подбираются технические средства отбора донных отложений, планируется разработка методики работ на водоеме, намечается благоприятное время для полевой экспедиции (с учетом розы ветров, среднесуточных температур, наличия и количества осадков), маршрут экспедиции и расположение базовых лагерей. Производятся регламентные работы по настройке и калибровке аппаратуры и оборудования, подготовка снаряжения, обеспечивающего безопасное проведение полевых работ на намеченных к изучению озерах. Подготовка снаряжения производится исходя из ожидаемых глубин, на которых будет производиться отбор донных осадков, удаления точек отбора от береговой линии. Размеры изучаемого озера, ожидаемая гидрологическая обстановка предопределяют выбор и комплектацию плавсредств (пневмоплатформа, судно и т.д.). Обеспечение гарантированной безопасности планируемых исследований является первоочередной задачей подготовительного этапа.
