Родился самый знаменитый создатель средств для макияжа в 1872 году в России, в городке Лодзь (на данный момент территория Польши). К своим 14 годам стал парикмахером в театре оперы, где кроме париков занимался также костюмами и гримом. Навыки приобретенные в театре, очень помогли ему в будущем.

Загримированные им актеры, играли перед Николаем Вторым, и вскоре имя талантливого гримера стало широко известно среди русских дворян. Несколько лет он работал специалистом по косметике при дворе царя и в императорских театрах.

За несколько лет до эмиграции открыл свой первый магазин косметики, а в 1904 году эмигрировал в Америку вместе с семьей.
