В 1921 году Северная Ирландия появилась на картах именно потому, что протестанты составляли в этой части острова абсолютное большинство населения. В крупнейшем городе региона Белфасте их было вообще больше 75% жителей. Они не захотели присоединяться к только что образовавшейся католической Ирландии и предпочли остаться в составе протестантской Великобритании.
