Описание старой фотографии: История механотерапии связана с именем Густава Цандера (1835-1920), шведского физиотерапевта, профессора анатомии Упсальского университета, почетного доктора медицины и гигиены Шведской академии. В 1857 году он предложил пользоваться специальными аппаратами для врачебной гимнастики и разработал методы для механотерапии и массажа. В 1865 г. основал Медико-Механический институт и тогда же сконструировал 27 аппаратов. К 1910 году институт располагал 72 аппаратами. Цандер первым сконструировал аппараты вибрационного массажа и выпрямления позвоночника, создал новую систему гимнастики. Механотерапия - лечение целенаправленным и дозированным движением на специальных аппаратах (тренажерах). Сущность метода заключается в том, чтобы вызвать гармоническое развитие организма при помощи систематических упражнений всех мышечных групп тела. Для каждого больного определяется степень напряжения, соответствующая силе его мышц. Каждое движение сосредотачивается в определенной группе мышц и строго дозируется, поэтому при выполнении упражнений человек не чувствует переутомления. Механотерапией лечат только хронические заболевания.
В далеком 1898 году дирекция Вод совершила сделку по покупке архитектурного проекта, который был представлен на Нижегородской торгово-промышленной выставке. Уже летом 1902 года состоялось официальное открытие этого института. Здание с необычной формой и с острыми стрельчатыми шпилями на крыше, легкое, изящное, запоминающееся. Словно из сказки пришло оно – резьба по дереву, купола, башенки на углах, большая ваза возле главного входа, с красивыми контурами арок было построено всего за 4 месяца недалеко от питьевой галереи "Ессентуки № 17" и с правой стороны Аллеи источников. Наверху здания Цандеровского института механотерапии в виде украшения стоит оригинальная ваза. Несущий каркас здания построен из дерева, а в проемах кирпичная закладка.
