Основной резервуар для хранения пищи — желудок. Он лежит под диафрагмой в левой части брюшной полости. Позади и ниже желудка располагается поджелудочная железа, участвующая в расщеплении белков, жиров, углеводов и выделяющая гормоны инсулин и глюкагон. В правой верхней части брюшной полости под диафрагмой размещается печень. Чуть ниже печени располагается желчный пузырь, который играет важную роль в переваривании пищи. Между желудком и диафрагмой лежит селезенка, принимающая участие в защите человеческого организма от инфекций и потери крови.
