Authoritarian governments are very diverse around the world; some are stable and some are not. We can distinguish them by the following types:

Military government: a group of officers use their troops to take over the government and run it themselves. The usually stay in power for a relatively short period of time. Why? (think: legitimacy, alliances and internal divisions)
One-party states: origins (military coups, national independence movements, socialist revolutions). The party is the basis of the government, its ideology and legitimacy. The party provides institutional links between citizens and the government. There is replacement of leaders , not the party. Therefore, one-party states are more stable. How is authoritarian one-party system different from a dominant party system in a democracy?
Court politics: politics revolve heavily around one person.
