Археологические исследования Болгарского городища начались в 60-70 годах 19 века. Доказательством существования в средневековом городе развитой ремесленной структуры являются многочисленные горны различной спецификации – для металлургии и гончарства. Раскоп LXX был заложен на западной окраине Болгарского городища в районе Голландского озера (рис. 1). Общая площадь составила 242 м2. Локализация раскопа была выбрана не случайно. Еще в 1948 году археологи обнаружили на этом месте шесть гончарных горнов и три мастерские. Заселение района, судя по вещевому и нумизматическому материалу, относится к началу XIV века
