I never cease to be amazed with the hype that goes along with JV fragrance releases. Take a look at the impressively contructed list of notes and it is hard not to go wow at what we see before our eyes.
Yep it is the packaging that beguiles us into thinking something special going on here now. Then again that is what Rock and Roll is all about : image and appearance trump all as any aspiring rocker will know by now.
Such is the case with JV Dark Rebel. The magic recipe of intriguing notes with some nifty product packaging is served up in double portions.
As for the scent, best way to look at is like this :
picture yourself after a 2 hour gig in a smoky small club. Morning is arriving and the signs of a wild night partying are very clear. If you want to keep the smell of tobacco and liqour and stale perfume on you for the whole day, then JV Dark Rebel is right up your alley. For me I want to wash that type of odor off me before I do anything else for the day.
Put an ashtray beside you with partly finshed blond tobacco cigarette in it and that about sums up JV Dark Rebel.

Reminds me of Ted Lapidus Black Soul ........only that Black Soul has more personality and presence.

JV is really getting carried away with the whole mysterious mercurial rock star thing. He would need to go back to the drawing board and come up with something decent.

Wondeful notes, excellent opening...an excellent scent when I sprayed it on paper. It smelled dark, musky, woody and warm. I kinda thought it had a trail of oud in there...

On skin, it was a bit underwhelming when I sprayed it on myself. It smelled a bit boozy, dried down quickly to something that smelled like cardamom and mint gum.

AMAZING, I can't stop smelling this! I get tobacco, rum, woods and sugar cane. Possibly the best cologne release in 2015.

I never really gave this a second look when it was released. Sephora had it almost hidden on the bottom shelf and unlabeled. I recognized it was the new release by the bottle design so I figured why not give it a sniff....

WOW!! This is a JV scent? I grabbed a full bottle and never looked back. I was looking to add to my fall/winter collection and this will be a most welcome addition. I get mostly leather, tobacco and rum which produces a subtle and spicy sweetness. It's not overly sweet but just the right amount.

After about 4 hours it settles in to a woody/vanilla skin scent. JV sort of has a reputation for great scents with poor performance but this one has exceeded my expectations! I get about 6 hours with moderate projection for the first 4 before it becomes a skin scent, so not bad. Best suited for a casual evening scent but I wear it day or night because I really like it!!

Gave this a quick sniff tonight. The opening is compelling in a "please buy it before the opening notes wear off" kind of way. It smells like leather, tobacco, saffron, and a touch of licorice. There's no castoreum that I can detect (and I know that material well), but I suspect that the leathery facets might be aiming for "castoreum." It is dark at the outset and smells reasonably moody for a dept. store scent, but it collapses into standard generic vaguery around the 15-minute point. Although I find the Varvatos line to sit a notch above the usual tat that haunts shopping malls, the brand still favors that weird, ambiguously industrial sweet goo-musk that's ubiquitous in mainstream. And that where this heads fast. The interesting opening craps out and you're looking at about three hours of standard-fare Eau de Macy's after that.

Wow, that is different for a designer release. Very smokey, dark, mysterious opening that is a bit harsh. I get the rum and spices. However, the leather and tobacco quickly overtake the scent. It is a smokey dirty leather with a bit of warm tobacco. There is a warm sweet woody background (Reminds me of ebony wood) that envelops the rum, tobacco, and leather. This has a smell befitting of the name. I honestly have no clue what castoreum smells like but I get a musky vibe going on. This would be nice for the fall on a cool day outside or in the winter. Go easy on the trigger, even though like all JV frags its light on performance, this could offend people.
Maybe when this hits fragrancenet.com I might take a second look at it. For now Vintage is better however I wouldn't mind have both :)
This reminds me of Tokyo Milk Bulletproof or Idole by Lubin, by the way.

Starts off as burnt leaves and tangy BBQ sauce and after about an hour, it starts smelling pleasant. One of the better Varvatos releases, still nothing tops the original.

After sampling this fragrance all week my opinion is (similar to below):
1- I love the scent. Especially the opening notes. Smoky Dark liquid
2- it doesn't last. Lucky if I can get 3 hours out of it.
3- I don't mind the base notes. Synthetic smelling base but still nice.

Overall I am happy I bought it. Altho I just wished it lasted longer.

The SA at Macy's are starting to recognise who I am but there is always someone new when I go there to check out what's new once in awhile.. This last bombards me,"oh, I got one for you!" Not giving me a chance to even ask she give me a dry down card or this fragrance "rebel by John varvatos" I smell... I look at her and say.."I don't smell anything" she smells it .."I do".. Typicall John varvatos poor longevity.... Spayed again for top notes.. Not too bad. I also like the original JV that's all black...but same story...poor longevity makes me pass on this house...

One of the most daring main stream launches that I've tested in recent times. This is a scent that is dominated by Tobacco and Leather; and not much effort is spent on making it compatible with the fresh/ sporty trends of nowadays.

The openning was slightly overpowering and reminded me of the original Michael Kors (2001) for a few minutes. It differentiates itself from that however very quickly and dries down to a smoky scent which is as I said dominated by Tobacco and Leather. The style of the scent goes well with the john varvatos designs and I think he did a good job in creating something consistent with the rest of his portfolio.

Given my personal preferences, I will not add this to my own collection. But I would recommend it to be given a try by anyone who is looking for a tobacco/ leather by a designer.

I'll be honest...I totally impulse bought this fragrance and now I'm not 100% sure about it?

John Varvatos is a brand rarely seen in the UK until now, ironic that a week after I come back from the states (where I saw this stuff all over & didn't sample) I end up buying a JV fragrance at home. Anyway I knew nothing about the brand except for mixed reviews on here and have managed to aquire 5 (4 mini's) and this one due to the fact I quite liked the lot.

Dark Rebel seemed at first to be a very interesting, dark, smokey scent with a slightly mysterious edge if not a bit of a silly name. The opening is of uber dark ebony woods, tobacco, leather and styrax to my nose made this very appealing. An raw animal quality shrouded in spiced rum and a strong cinnamon note which dies down quickly into a heart of familiar mainstream fodder.
I have to admit this is a classic case of a really mediocre fragrance masquerading as something quite unique and special for the opening 10 minutes. Shame really because I genuinely sat up and noticed Dark Rebel.
It's not doom and gloom though the skin scent this dies down to is a sugary, Captain Morgan which is there throughout but somehow smells slightly cheap as apposed to that chaotic opening. In summary 'Niche opening, designer dry down.' Performance is average bordering more on the poor side but you know what??? I'm not disheartened because this fragrance takes you on a journey, all be it a short and slightly disappointing one ...but a journey nonetheless.

Blind Buy, (The tester got stolen.):

I bought this one today. I love the way it smells. I have just put some on and I am starting into my evening. It smells like it will last, the quality seems solid. Not sure how far it will radiate but I can tell you this, It is a pleasant way to start off my evening. I am keeping an eye on its performance given the past reviews below, but within the first hour I gotta say I LOVE it.
And I have never said that about a JV fragrance before.

This cologne is a HUGE disappointment. When I first smelled it, I got super excited: FINALLY a unique, dangerous, dark super-masculine cologne. It smelled like amazing smoky campfire and spice. Totally great. I was about to buy a bottle, but then thought I'd let the cologne sit on my skin for a little bit.

Fifteen minutes later, I was home, and had my girlfriend smell my arm. She looked puzzled. "That smells really sweet and feminine", she said.

Then I smelled my arm - and yeah, she was right: the stuff had totally changed. The first few minutes were amazing, but after that, it smells like a woman's perfume. I've never actually known of any cologne that changed that much. I even ended up wondering if some of it was just my imagination, so I went back the next day and sprayed some on again. Once again, it smelled fantastic - and once again, fifteen minutes later, I smelled like a nineteen year old sorority girl.

Really disappointed, and I'm glad I didn't buy this stuff.
