Принципи що визначають поєднання пристроїв або їх зовнішній устрій називають архітектурою. Практично всі сучасні комп'ютери сконструйовані на основі шинної архітектури. Згідно цій архітектурі різні пристрої пов'язані між собою за допомогою загального каналу - шини. В деяких випадках її називають магістраллю. До загального каналу підключаються різні пристрої (процесор,оперативна пам'ять). З шиною вони часто поєднані спеціальними пристроями-посередниками - контролерами і адаптерами. Сучасні машини збирають із окремих частин як конструктор, причому пристрої намагаються створювати у вигляді окремих модулів, а їх контролери - у вигляді плат. Деякі основні пристрої (сама шина, основні контролери і т.д.) збирають в основному в одному модулі - материнській платі.
